curriculum vitae Tom De Bruyn started his professional carreer as a researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in Johannesburg, both based in Johannesburg, South Africa. From 2000 till 2001, he focused on gender issues and urban safety policies. In 2001, he returned to Belgium, where he worked at the Geography Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

In 2002, he joined the Higher Institute for Labour Studies, where he has worked on several issues relating to sustainable development and environmental issues on the one hand, and international migration and globalisation on the other hand.

His main domain of expertise consists of Migration and Development issues, i.e. the relationship between migration of people and/or delocalisation of firms on the one hand, and the economic and social development of the countries of origin and destination, on the other hand.

He has conducted specific studies on migrant remittances in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi; Other research includes the impact of offshore outsourcing on employees in Europe.

Currently, Tom is involved in research projects on the diaspora philanthropy among migrant communities in Belgium, i.e. Turkish, Moroccan, Indian and Congolese (commissioned by the King Baudouin Foundation); remittances to the DR Congo (commissioned by IOM); and on the impact of the restructuring of global value chains on employees in Europe (supported by 6th Framework Programme of the EU).
