Rafael Peels studied Applied Economic Sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven (K.U.Leuven) from 1997 to 2001. He received a Steve-Biko scholarship from the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) to elaborate his research project at the University of Cuenca (Ecuador). From 2002 to 2004 he obtained a MPhil in Latin-American Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with a scholarship of the Flemish Community.
After his studies, he participated in trainee programmes with various NGO’s in Mexico and Guatemala.
Since January 2005, he has been working as a research associate at HIVA. His most important research domains are Development Economics, Poverty and Social Impact Assessment, Social Dialogue in International Development Agreements, Multi-Level-Governance, Afro-American Cultural-Religious Dynamism and the Evaluation of Development projects.
